A dimmable 6W led light bulb has gone on sale which claims to match the performance, brightness and incandescence of a traditional 60W light bulb and last up to 25 years - but it comes with a ￡30 price tag.

Lemnis claims that the bulb 'uses 90% less energy than an incandescent bulb' and is also more energy-efficient than other energy saving compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs).Based on using it for four hours a day, Lemnis says the bulb can last for around 25 years.

Less efficient, traditional light bulbs are being phased out between now and 2012 under new EU rules. Since September 2009, shops have been no longer able to order new stocks of 100W light bulbs. And 75W traditional bulbs will be phased out in the same way in 2010, followed by 60W traditional bulbs in 2011.
